Brief History: Rikku was born in Southern Ireland, where her family lived until she was three. Disagreements between her family and the rest of the population around them developed, centered around the fact that they were atheists living in a Catholic country. Her extended family and a large group of their close friends left and settled in Italy, though this wasn't much better for a group of atheists. So they decided to hide the fact that they didn't believe in any of the teachings of the Catholic community. Taking up the last name "Durant," which meant "enduring" in Latin, Rikku's family and friends spread out all over Italy and soon into Europe, hiding the fact that they were atheists by speaking almost exclusively Latin. Several of them learned English or the language of the area. Rikku learned English and Italian so she could communicate with the people who lived around her, though she mostly used Latin anyway, since that was the only language her parents and most of her friends spoke. She'd never had a friend who wasn't a Durant, even though Rikku was extremely out-going and never judged anyone for their beliefs.

Around Rikku's 19th birthday, her parents decided they were moving again and so they uprooted with another handful of extended family and close friends, taking root in Los Angeles for its population and diversity. As she is wont to do, Rikku chose her college by random chance, letting her closed eyes and outstretched finger show her the best choice of schools. Her parents raised an eyebrow when she told them she'd be attending Mishima University, but they shrugged and soon she was enrolled.

Of course, since the school year is almost over, Rikku's simply here for a self-orientation. She's taken a position as a mechanic's assistant for the summer, until school starts up again. Because she was raised speaking exclusively Latin, Rikku has a habit of slipping back into that language when she's upset or angry. This usually grants her strange looks that she tends to ignore or brush off.
